To The New Patient
Patients present different health challenges. In order to provide the best care possible, the initial visit will consist of the following things.
- Consultation: here is where we find out all the details about your present health concerns and past health history.
- Thorough examination: This is used to assess the health of your spine and nerve system. For those individuals with specific health concerns, the examination helps to identify underlying factors that need to be addressed.
- X-rays (as needed): These are taken to determine the health of the underlying spinal structures. In cases where patients have specific spinal health concerns, it assists me in ruling out underlying disease that may be contributing all or in part to their current problem. All x-rays are sent out for review by a chiropractic radiologist to further insure best results.
Note: We do not x-ray pregnant patients. “Moms to be” get special care using methods that they find comfortable and effective. Children usually do not require x-rays. I have been caring for children (of all ages) and pregnant patients for over 30 years.
The goal of your first visit is to determine the problem and develop a course of action. After this visit, I set time aside to evaluate the examination, develop films, determine if it’s a Chiropractic case and if so, formulate a plan of care.
All this is discussed on the follow-up visit. I suggest bringing your “significant other” if you feel comfortable doing so. That way they’ll better understand what’s going on, what you need to do and why you need to do it. This usually makes the whole health recovery process easier for everyone involved.
Why x-rays are important
Many people perceive that all Doctors of Chiropractic utilize high force thrusts or twists to the spine. Nothing could be further from the truth . There are many gentle, effective methods that deliver excellent results! How I know? Because those are the methods I use in my practice.
I am dedicated to delivering excellent care with the greatest degree of comfort and safety. Because of this, the method I primarily use to adjust (re-align) the spine is the Activator method . It works well with patients of any age and has been validated by many peer reviewed research studies. If you would like to learn more about it, you can go to Activator.com. Activator requires its doctors to attend yearly training to maintain their certification, of which I am certified at the highest current level Advanced Proficiency). I have been using this method in practice for close to 20 of my 30 plus years in practice. Please note: Any doctor that is actually certified and current in their training is listed on the Activator website. That is the only way to be assured the doctor is proficient in this technique. Just check the Activator.com website (the “find a doctor” tab).
On occasion, we may also use other related techniques as well as rehab exercise instructions & stretching advice. This helps to strengthen core muscles of the spine and increase flexibility.
